Geospatial Technology Workshop
Workshop Goal: Provide overview of geospatial technology to natural resource practitioners and Cooperative Extension educators with hands on experience focused on practical examples.
Workshop Content: This workshop combines 2 workshops offered through the UC Berkeley Geospatial Innovation Facility. One workshop segment has been designed for participants interested in environmental science and natural resources management with little to no experience in GIS. The presentation will introduce you to the types of analyses and visualization techniques that can be done with GIS, as well as the basic structures of spatial data. After the lecture you will follow an interactive exercise that has been designed to introduce you to ArcGIS Desktop software while analyzing environmental data from the Northern Sierra Nevada. The second day is an introduction to new and exciting geospatial technologies including mobile data collection apps and unmanned aerial systems (UAS – drone technology). Participants will then take a field trip to a nearby location for a UAS demonstration and to collect GPS records with your smartphone, before returning to the Forestry Camp to finish up by mapping our field data.
Both of these workshop modules have been designed for participants with little to no experience with GIS or UAS, and will serve as an introduction to some of the most cutting edge of today’s technologies.
Audience: Public and private resource professionals as well as UC Cooperative Extension Advisors and Specialists.
